An oncology plant makes cancer medicines. HVAC is the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

At Madinat Al-Dawaa, we supplied the cleanrooms and the water and steam systems of the plant. The purified water system there makes 1,000 litres per hour.

In a turnkey project, one company designs, supplies, installs and tests the plant under one contract. At Sudair Pharma, our contract was for the three parts named above.

The process machines came from other suppliers.

Sudair Pharma

A cleanroom at the Sudair Pharma plant: panel walls, a view window, ceiling lights and a machine with a clear guard

Sudair Pharma's plant is an oncology manufacturing facility. Before Sudair chose Fabtech, it sent a team to our factories.

The team inspected them, assessed our technical teams and checked our references. Sudair then gave Fabtech one turnkey project.

It was for the cleanrooms, the HVAC and the clean utilities of its production plant of 6,285 square metres. The process machines came from other suppliers.

Work done: cleanroom and HVAC and clean utilities. A cleanroom is a room where the air is filtered and controlled.

Clean utilities are the purified water, steam and gases that a plant uses.

Madinat Al-Dawaa

A cleanroom corridor at the Madinat Al-Dawaa plant: white panel walls, blue doors with view panels, a smooth floor

At Madinat Al-Dawaa, Fabtech supplied the cleanrooms and the utilities of the plant. Later, we also supplied spare parts for the water system and upgrades for the BMS, the building management system.

Work done: cleanroom modular panels, epoxy flooring, the HVAC system, cleanroom equipment, the electrical system and fire fighting. Epoxy flooring is a hard, smooth floor coating that is easy to clean.

The water work was a purified water generation system, a WFI generation system and pure steam generation and distribution.

The water and steam utilities at Madinat Al-Dawaa

Utilities are the services a plant needs to run: water, steam, air and gases.

Fabtech supplied several water and steam systems at Madinat Al-Dawaa. The steps below follow the order in which water usually moves through a plant.

Our high purity water systems page shows the full range.

  1. Raw water

The water enters the plant as raw water, before any treatment. Fabtech supplied the raw water distribution system.

A distribution system is the pipework that carries water to each place where it is used. We also supplied the pipework for drinking water (potable water).

  2. Purified water generation

Next on the route is the system that makes purified water. Purified water is water with salts, particles and germs removed to the standard that medicines need.

At Madinat Al-Dawaa, this system makes 1,000 litres per hour.

  3. Purified water distribution

Purified water leaves its storage tank through a loop of pipe. In most plants, the loop carries the water to each point of use and back to the tank.

The water keeps moving. Fabtech supplied the pipework for purified water at Madinat Al-Dawaa.

  4. WFI generation

The next system makes WFI (water for injection), the highest grade of water in a medicine plant. WFI must also be free of endotoxins, which are substances from bacteria that cause fever.

In most plants it is made from purified water. At Madinat Al-Dawaa, this system makes 500 litres per hour.

  5. Pure steam

Steam comes after the water systems. Pure steam is clean steam that a plant uses to sterilise machines and pipes, which means to kill all the germs on them.

Fabtech supplied a pure steam generator rated at 300 kg. We also supplied the pipework that carries the steam.

  6. Compressed air, nitrogen and boiler steam

The other utilities come next. We supplied the air compressor and its pipework.

We also supplied the nitrogen piping, and the boiler with its steam pipework. A hot water system of 3 cubic metres per hour was part of our supply too.

  7. Controls: BMS and SCADA

The last step is the controls. A BMS watches and controls the building services, such as the HVAC.

SCADA is software that shows the plant staff what each machine is doing and keeps a record. Fabtech supplied the BMS and a SCADA system for three control panels.

How a Fabtech project in Saudi Arabia runs

We start with design.

Our pharmaceutical engineering services cover the layout of the plant, the cleanrooms and the utilities.

Then we supply the equipment, install it and commission it.

Commissioning means starting each system and checking that it runs.

At Sudair Pharma, we also installed machines that other suppliers had delivered.

Then we qualify the plant. Qualification means the written tests and records that prove the plant works as designed.

Its four stages are DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ: design, installation, operational and performance qualification. Our equipment qualification page explains each one.

Our case study records that the Sudair Pharma plant was completed and is in operation. Work done this way, under one contract, is a turnkey pharmaceutical project.

Fabtech builds plants that are GMP and WHO compliant. GMP is good manufacturing practice, the rules a medicine plant must follow.
